What Is a VPN and How Does It Work?
A plain-English explainer of what a VPN is, how its encrypted tunnel protects your traffic, what it hides from your ISP and local network, and the real limits worth knowing.
What a VPN Actually Is
A virtual private network (VPN) is a service that routes your device's internet traffic through an encrypted connection to a server run by the VPN provider. To the websites and networks you touch, your traffic appears to come from that server's IP address rather than your own. The term is old networking jargon, but for everyday users a VPN mainly means privacy from your local network and a change of apparent location.
The Encrypted Tunnel
When you connect, your VPN app negotiates an encrypted 'tunnel' between your device and the provider's server using a protocol such as WireGuard or OpenVPN. Everything inside that tunnel, the sites you request and the data you exchange, is scrambled so that anyone watching the link between you and the server sees only unreadable ciphertext rather than the contents or destination of each request.
That encryption protects the leg of the journey between you and the VPN server. Once traffic leaves the server for its final destination, it travels the normal internet. If the site uses HTTPS, as most now do, that portion stays encrypted end to end anyway; if it does not, the VPN server operator is in a position to see it, which is exactly why the provider you pick matters.
What a VPN Hides
On the local side, a VPN hides your browsing from your internet service provider, your mobile carrier, and whoever runs the Wi-Fi you are on, such as a cafe or airport. They can see that you are connected to a VPN and how much data you move, but not which sites you visit or what you send. This is the strongest and most reliable thing a VPN does.
A VPN also masks your real IP address and rough location from the sites and apps you use, replacing them with the server's. That can reduce IP-based tracking and let you appear to be in another region. It does not, however, make you anonymous. It shifts trust from your ISP to your VPN provider rather than removing the middleman from the picture entirely.
What a VPN Does Not Hide
A VPN cannot undo information you hand over yourself. If you log into Google, Facebook, or your bank, that account knows it is you regardless of your IP address. Cookies and browser fingerprinting, the unique blend of your screen size, fonts, and settings, can also follow you across sites, and a VPN does nothing to stop either, as the EFF's work on fingerprinting demonstrates.
The provider itself is another limit. Because your traffic flows through its servers, a VPN company could in principle log your activity. 'No-logs' claims and independent audits exist precisely because you have to trust them on this. A VPN is also not antivirus: it will not stop malware, phishing, or a weak password from compromising you.
Who Actually Benefits
A VPN is genuinely useful on untrusted networks, for keeping browsing private from an ISP that may log or sell data, and for reaching content or services tied to a particular region while traveling. Journalists, remote workers connecting to a company network, and privacy-conscious users all have solid, everyday reasons to run one.
It is less useful if your goal is total anonymity or evading a determined, well-resourced adversary; that is a job for tools like Tor, and even then with caveats. Treat a VPN as one sensible layer of privacy hygiene rather than a magic cloak, and it will serve you well.
